The Wheels on the Bus

12
Aug

We have been focusing on some of Hailey’s favorite songs lately and doing art projects about those songs. Yesterday I showed you the Wheel Painting we did to go with the Wheels on the Bus song that Hailey loves. Today I’m going to show you the bus we made.

Here’s what you’ll need: construction paper- black, blue, white and yellow, glue, scissors, chalk and black marker.

  • Leave the blue piece of construction paper whole for the background.
  • Cut the yellow piece into the shape of a bus and cut out a yellow rectangle to be the door. Outline the yellow rectangle with the black marker and then draw a line down the middle.
  • With the black piece of paper- make a road and draw lines on it with the chalk. Cut out wheels and bumpers for the bus.
  • With the white- cut out windows and cut out 2 small circles for the inside of the wheels.

Hailey loved putting her bus together. We sang The Wheels on the Bus while she worked.

I always let Hailey add the glue to her projects. When she is ready to put the piece on I show her where the piece should go, but it is up to her where she actually puts it. After all, it is her bus and it’s supposed to be fun to make it.

The finished bus.

Wheel Painting

I am still focusing on lots of fun songs with Hailey and then planning fun activities based on her favorite songs. Right now one of her favorite songs is The Wheels on the Bus. Here are the lyrics if you need them:

The wheels on the bus go round and round,
round and round,
round and round.
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
all through the town.

Continue using phrases like:
The wipers on the bus go Swish, swish, swish…
The horn on the bus goes Beep, beep, beep…
The Driver on the bus says “Move on back”…
The baby on the bus says “Wah, wah, wah”…
The mommy on the bus says “Shhh, shhh, shhh”…

Click here to watch the song on YouTube if you need the tune.

So, since Hailey loves this song right now we did a painting using wheels.

Here’s what you’ll need: a couple of cars (with moving wheels), a couple of paint colors, 2 paper plates and a piece of paper.

Spread some paint on the plate- spread it out very thin or you’ll end up with blobs of paint rather than tire tracks.

Since Hailey had never done this before I had to show her how to roll the car in the paint and then put it on the paper.  Once she saw how it worked she took right over.

Add another color, if you want- it is certainly not necessary.

The final picture.

The Little Green Frog

Have I mentioned my new favorite blog lately?  I have?  Well, I’m mentioning it again.  No Time For Flashcards has tons of fabulous ideas and I used another one with Hailey.

Hailey absolutely loves the song Little Green Frog- here are the lyrics if you don’t know the song:

Mmm mmm went the little green frog one day
Mmm mmm went the little green frog
Mmm mmm went the little green frog one day
And they all went mmm mmm ahhh!!

But we all know frogs go ladedadeda
ladedadeda ladedadeda
We all know frogs go ladedadeda
ladedadeda ladedadeda
They don’t go mmm mmm ahh.

If I was brave like Allison over at No Time for Flashcards I’d sing it for you so you would know the tune.  But I am not that brave, so instead I’ll give you a link to her post.  If you need the tune you can get it here.

So, here is our frog that we made to go along with the song:

Here’s what you’ll need: construction paper- red, white and black, paper bag, green paint, paint brush, scissors and glue.

Cut one long strip of red paper and roll it up.  Then cut 2 medium sized black circles and 2 small white circles.

Paint the paper bag green.

Open the bag up and stand it up to dry.

Glue on the eyes and tongue after the paint is dry.

Hailey loved playing with the frog.  We used it as a puppet for singing Little Green Frog.  And then Hailey used it to carry her (play) cell phone around in for the rest of the day.  Oh well, she had fun with it.

A Little Backyard Lesson

The other day as Rich was clearing our yard getting ready to mow he found this cute little toad.  And Hailey was just thrilled to see a real live toad.

The cute little toad.

Hailey got a little bit brave and tried to feed the toad a piece of grass.

Then we put the toad in some water.  This left quite an impression on Hailey as she is still talking about the toad going swimming more than a week after it happened.

One last touch which brought on lots of giggles.

Then we let the toad go so he could find his mommy, which also left quite an impression on Hailey as she
has also talked quite a bit about the toad going to find his mommy.
