Poppins Book Nook- Pirates

The theme for July for Poppins Book Nook was pirates! What a fun theme!
We read “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long. It was such a fun book and the illustrations were great!
At the beginning of the book, the little boy, Jeremy is building a sand castle at the beach when he sees a pirate ship. So, we thought it would be fun to build our own sand castle.

Next, Hailey and Hunter painted some rocks gold… well Hunter insisted that his rocks also be green, but for the most part the rocks were gold 🙂

Hailey painted an old baby wipes container to make it look like a treasure chest.
After the paint dried, Hailey and Hunter added some gems to the treasure chest.
This is our finished treasure chest…
… filled with gold and jewels.
Then, Hailey drew a map of our back yard.
This is the completed map of our back yard… Rich burned the edges of a paper bag to give it an old look.
Then, while we waited inside, Rich went out back and hid our treasure chest.
According to the map Hailey drew, which Rich added an X to, she needed to take just a few steps from the fire pit to find the treasure.
But, when she dug to see what she would find- she found another clue…
…and then another clue…
…and several more clues!
Finally, she found the treasure chest!
We had so much fun with this activity!!

Hunter is 31 months old.
Letter Y activities:
(Printables for the letter Y are from 1+1+1=1 and Confessions of a Homeschooler.)
Hunter used colored pencils to color his letter Y paper.
Hunter loves the do-a-dot papers and has gotten pretty good at stamping the circles.
He added some letter Y stamps to his Y paper.
We glued yellow yarn onto the letter Y.
Y is for Yo Yo.
Shapes and colors:
Hunter used water colors to decorate his shape paper.
He colored the yo-yos the correct color with his crayons.
Sensory:
Hunter had beads in his sensory bin this week. He used a measuring cup to scoop the beads from one bin to the other.
Manipulatives:
He put magnetic pom poms onto the Y is for Yarn page.
Other:
The pictures in this post are actually from several weeks ago- and it was the week of our last official day of school for Hailey. So, we took some last day of school pictures and this is Hunter on our last day of school.
The top paper in this picture is one that Hunter did on our first day of Tot School back in September and the bottom page is the one he did on the last day of school. It was fun to compare his coloring and his answers to the questions.
Next week we will finish up the alphabet and then we have some other fun activities to do during the summer (until the baby arrives:-)).

Week in Review

I can’t believe how fast this school year went by. This was our last week of 2nd grade (which was almost a month ago, I’m finally all caught up!). I very clearly remember the first day of school and wondering how I was going to do this homeschooling thing all year long. But, we made it and we both loved it!
Hailey on her last day of second grade. I wish I could slow down time, she is growing up so fast.
Here are some of the things we did during our last week:
Language Arts:
We finished up our author unit study about Tomie dePaola from Around the Kampfire. After we read “Little Grunt and the Big Egg,” Hailey created a book about how she would care for a prehistoric pet if she had one.
On the first day of school Hailey made the top picture (which Hunter colored on while I had it hanging up on the wall :-(). On the last day of school, I had her do the same paper and then we compared how her answers had changed or stayed the same.
Science:
Our butterflies hatched! Hailey was able to watch one come out of its chrysalis.
We started with 5 caterpillars and ended up with 5 butterflies that were all able to fly away. One seemed to have damaged wings, but when the time came to fly away it was able to fly.
Hailey put together a lapbook all about caterpillars and butterflies to show what she learned during our unit. Most of the printables are from here and here.
Inside the first flap. The top shows the life cycle of the butterfly.
On the bottom there is a little booklet where Hailey wrote out the life cycle of a butterfly. Then she made a butterfly diagram.
This is inside the next flap of the lapbook.
On the top there are butterfly cards that show many of the types of butterflies. Next to that is some butterfly math. Underneath is a Venn diagram comparing butterflies and moths.
On the bottom of this flap there is a little booklet that shows the predators of butterflies, another booklet that shows the defenses butterflies use to protect themselves, and also a little booklet to show the lifespan of a butterfly.
This is the last page of the butterfly lapbook.
On the top there a book to show the different flowers that butterflies like. There is a observation journal where Hailey wrote about what she observed in the caterpillars we watched turn into butterflies. Then there is a little caterpillar with some facts about caterpillars.
This section has a butterfly Hailey made to show the symmetry of butterfly wings. There is also information about what caterpillars and butterflies eat.
We had an amazing first year of homeschooling!! We are enjoying summer vacation right now and waiting for our new baby to arrive 🙂

Hunter is 30 months old.
Letter X activities:

Shapes & Colors:
Our shape this week was the rectangle- Hunter worked hard at stamping some rectangles onto his paper.
Hunter knows all of his colors, but he really enjoys doing these printables, so we keep using these. He doesn’t need any help– he looks at the color word and finds the right marker to color the picture.
Sensory:
One day Hunter played with shaving cream in his sensory bin. It was a huge mess, but he had a great time.
Other:
We practiced counting by putting a number on the paper and then counting out the correct number of pieces.
