Rainforest Unit

rf20

We recently finished up a really fun rainforest unit. We both had a lot of fun and learned so much!

rf

Of course, we read lots of books about the rainforest.

rf19

These are some of our favorite books that we read about the rainforest.  We learned a lot from both fiction and non fiction books.

rf2

Hailey made this rainforest layer craftivity from The Razzle Dazzle Classroom.

rf3

The outside shows and labels the different layers of the rainforest.

rf4

The flaps open up and on the inside there is information about each layer of the rainforest.

rf5

One day I put all of this food out- cinnamon, coffee, bananas, tea, pineapple, nuts, sugar, coconut, and chocolate.  I asked Hailey if she knew what they all had in common.  She was surprised to learn that they all come from the rainforest.  Of course, we did a little sampling of the food 🙂

rf6

She made a little poster about the different foods that come from the rainforest.

rf7

We also made this fantastic diorama of the rainforest.

rf8

Closer look at the emergent layer.

rf9

Closer look at the canopy.

rf10

Closer look at the understory.

rf11

Closer look at the forest floor.

rf12

Hailey made this great display to show what she learned about the rainforest.  She included plants, food, and animals from the rainforest.  She also colored a map to show where the rainforests are located.  She added some information about camouflage, how important the rainforest is for the world’s oxygen, and some fun facts.

Hailey and her rainforest display at our educational fair with our homeschool co-op group.

Hailey worked really hard on this unit and she had a great time!  It made me so happy to hear her ask if she could learn more about the rainforest!

Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice

We had a lot of fun reading Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice by Steve Metzger and doing some great activities to go along with the story.

penguin

I put out some water and added some blue ice cubes and some penguins.  Hunter loved this and played with it for a very long time!

penguin2

I froze some water on a pan so that the penguins could go ice skating.  Hunter didn’t care for this activity too much at first, but once he got into it he really enjoyed it.  He even requested to play with it again later.

penguin3

We propped up the ice and tested to see which toys would slide down the ice.  We tried things other than the penguins, but I didn’t get a picture of that.

penguin4

I made a penguin out of an oatmeal box and provided some fish.

penguin5

Hunter tried to throw the fish into the penguin’s belly.

penguin6

I made some shape penguins and laminated them.

penguin7

As I called out a shape, Hunter had to find it and stand on the correct shape.

penguin8

Then I added numbers to the penguins

penguin9

We counted out the appropriate number of fish and put them on the penguin with that number on it.

It was another week of fun here at Our Crafts N Things!

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

If You Give a Mouse a Cookies activities

We have really been enjoying picking a book and then doing activities centered around that book for a week.  Our latest book was If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff.

mouse1

Hunter really liked making a puffy paint chocolate chip cookie.  He mixed up shaving cream, glue, and brown paint.

mouse

Then he spread the paint mixture onto a paper plate.

mouse2

Finally he added some chocolate chips.  When it dries it is puffy and it is really fun to touch and poke at it.

mouse3

I cut out some brown circles and numbered them 1-10.  Then we counted out the correct number of chocolate chips to add to each one.  This took a little while to finish because the chocolate chips kept disappearing 😉

mouse4

In the story the mouse draws a picture of his family, so Hunter drew a picture of his family.

mouse5

Hunter practiced writing some lines.  (from Royal Baloo)

mouse7

And of course, how could we read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie without making cookies?  So, we baked chocolate chips cookies together.

mouse6

Hunter thought they were yummy!

mouse8

Hailey wanted to help with the taste testing too.

Hunter definitely loved this story and asked to hear it over and over again!  We are having lots of fun in preschool!

Preschool- Letter H

04
Mar

ps1

Our focus letter during preschool has been the letter H. Here are some of things Hunter did:

ps

Hunter glued hearts onto the letter H.

ps4

He made an H door knob hanger and hung it up on his bedroom door.

ps5

Hunter used Do-a-Dot markers to decorate the letter H.

ps6

He painted an H paper while he wore his H crown.

ps9

I helped him make a letter H using playdough.

ps15

He had a lot of fun making a house.

ps16

H is for house.  (He insisted on putting an H at the end of word house too.)

ps17

Hunter showed Harper his H wand.

ps18

He stamped the letter H onto some paper using paint.

ps19

Hunter used a paint roller to paint this letter H…

ps20

…then he cut out some hippos (with help)…

ps21

…then he glued the hippos onto the H.

(All letter H printables are from Confessions of a Homeschooler, 1+1+1=1, and Enchanted Homeschooling Mom.)

ps11

Since Haystacks starts with H, Hunter and I made some delicious haystacks.

Other fun activities:

ps2

Working on a puzzle

ps3

Playing ABC Mouse with Hailey

ps7

Using his pegs

ps8

Coloring on his white board

ps13

As I called out a shape, Hunter put a Ninja Turtle sticker on the shape I said.

ps14

Playing with his Farmland Math set.

It was another 2 weeks of fun in preschool!
