Desert Scene
Dec
We have been continuing our study of different habitats around the world and the animals that live in those habitats. Our latest stop was the desert. We learned about where the deserts are located, the weather in the desert, the animals that live in the desert and their classifications and what kind of food they eat.
One of the animals we learned about was the camel. We did a little demonstration to learn why camels have such big feet. First, Hailey took a small circle of cardboard and pushed it into some sand. It sunk right down into the sand.
Then she tried the same thing with a larger cardboard cut out, representing a camel’s large foot. It did not sink into the sand, just like camels feet do not sink into the desert sand.
Hailey also created a representation of the desert. She mixed some white and brown paint to create a sand color. Then she mixed in some sand to give it some texture.
As we learned about different plants and animals, Hailey added them to her poster.
Hailey’s completed desert scene.
African Savanna Diorama
Oct
We are using Sassafras Science this year, and so far we are both really enjoying it! We have been studying Zoology and it has been so much fun! The first habitat we studied was the African Savanna. It worked out perfectly with our trip to Disney World, where we stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Hailey made an African Savanna diorama to show what she had learned. She painted, created trees, made some green grass for the wet season, and colored printables for the African Savanna animals.
Hailey’s completed African Savanna.
Weekly Wrap Up

We did a super fun unit during the summer about frogs! It was so interesting to learn about the frog life cycle.
Hailey helped me out by reading books about frogs to Anthony and Hunter.
They were all very interested in the books about frogs and listened so well to all of the information.
We used these fun little toys to talk about the life cycle- eggs, tadpole, froglet, frog.
We set up a little aquarium so we could watch our tadpoles grow.
Hunter added some food.
Hailey added the tadpoles.
We made this fun Froggie Fold Up Book.
The frog book all folded up.
We worked on this Frog Life Cycle printable.
Anthony and Hunter made a Life Cycle of a Frog book.
Hailey, Anthony, and Hunter made these cute little frogs.
We all learned so much and had a lot of fun doing it!
Weekly Wrap Up
Aug
I can’t believe that August is half way over! Summer is just going by too fast. We’ve been having lots of fun learning, playing, and just relaxing. Here are some of the activities we have done recently:
We have done a lot of writing practice this summer. This week we used Big Hero Six printables to try to keep it fun.
They practiced sizing,
cutting,
and patterns.
Each day, Anthony and Hunter practice writing their names. I try to change in up once in a while, so on this day they practiced writing on the sliding glass door using dry erase markers.
We made sense of touch books while we were reviewing a super fun science curriculum. Hunter is making a page for his book here, using sandpaper.
Anthony added bubble wrap to his sense of touch book to represent bumpy.
We made smelly flowers when we learned about the sense of smell. The kids made their flowers and then added a cotton ball to the middle that had been sprayed with perfume.
Table toys is still a favorite time of day! Here are some of the toys we used this week:
Anthony was really concentrating on making something with the Squigz.
They had fun using their Scooby characters when they built with the gears.
Hunter decided to organize his colors.
Since our focus was on Big Hero 6, we made these very simple Baymax masks.
Of course, they also spend lots of time outside.
