Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

The theme for July for Poppins Book Nook was pirates!  What a fun theme!

Poppins Book Nook- Pirates

We read “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long.  It was such a fun book and the illustrations were great!

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

At the beginning of the book, the little boy, Jeremy is building a sand castle at the beach when he sees a pirate ship.  So, we thought it would be fun to build our own sand castle.

Hailey’s finished sand castle.

Next, Hailey and Hunter painted some rocks gold… well Hunter insisted that his rocks also be green, but for the most part the rocks were gold 🙂

Our finished gold.

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

Hailey painted an old baby wipes container to make it look like a treasure chest.

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

After the paint dried, Hailey and Hunter added some gems to the treasure chest.

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

This is our finished treasure chest…

… filled with gold and jewels.

Then, Hailey drew a map of our back yard.

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

This is the completed map of our back yard… Rich burned the edges of a paper bag to give it an old look.

Then, while we waited inside, Rich went out back and hid our treasure chest.

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

According to the map Hailey drew, which Rich added an X to, she needed to take just a few steps from the fire pit to find the treasure.

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

But, when she dug to see what she would find- she found another clue…

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

…and then another clue…

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

…and several more clues!

Poppins Book Nook- PIrates

Finally, she found the treasure chest!

We had so much fun with this activity!!

Poppins Book Nook- The Great Outdoors

10
Jul

Poppins Book Nook

The theme for June for Poppins Book Nook was the great outdoors.  There is so much that can be done with this theme that it was hard to know where to start!  I had several library books about spring and summer and had planned to go with one of those.  But, Hunter didn’t want anything to do with those books.  Instead- he was interested in this one:

Poppins Book Nook

Charlie the Ranch Dog by Ree Drummond.  Hunter loved this book!!  (Our dog, Dottie, just so happens to look just like Charlie.)

Poppins Book Nook

So, we talked about what it would be like to live on a ranch or a farm and all the planting and work that would be done outside.

Poppins Book Nook

Hunter planted some (actually, A LOT of) grass seed in a cup.

Poppins Book Nook

Hailey also planted some grass seed.

Poppins Book Nook

They each also planted some beans.  We watered and made sure they got some sunlight.

Poppins Book Nook

1 week later we had some growth.

Poppins Book Nook

They continued to grow

Poppins Book Nook

Hailey has given the grass several trims.

Week in Review

In talking about the great outdoors, we also did a fun unit all about worms and learned what they do for our earth and how important they are for our gardens.  I had no idea!  You can see a little more about what we did here and here.

Poppins Book Nook- Folktales

May

Poppins Book Nook

The theme this month for Poppins Book Nook was folktales.

It was another crazy busy month here- but for a good reason this time.  We left on May 9th and didn’t get home until May 20th for a trip to Disney World!  So, there hasn’t been a whole lot of time this month to get a super creative activity done for Poppins Book Nook.  Here is what we did do:

Poppins Book Nook

We learned about Norway and read Three Billy Goats Gruff, a folktale from Norway.  We watched several different versions of the story on Youtube.

Exploring Norway

Hailey and Hunter both made a troll.

Exploring Norway

Hunter showing off his troll.

Exploring Norway

Hailey retold the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff- we used printables from Journey Into the World of Folktales from Enchanted Homeschooling Mom to make the goats.  First she drew a little backdrop on the white board, then she used her troll and the 3 billy goats to retell the story.

Poppins Book Nook

While we were in Disney World visiting Epcot, we stopped in for a visit in Norway.  After we went on the fun boat ride, Hailey and Hunter posed with this troll.  We also noticed that they had several different versions of Three Billy Goats Gruff on sale in their store.

Poppins Book Nook- Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Apr

Poppins Book Book

The theme this month for Poppins Book Nook was “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!”

We have had a super busy and crazy month with lots of sickness thrown in the mix.  So, we ran out of time to do anything new for this topic.  But, I decided to share some of the activities we have done from one of our favorite books.

The Polar Express

We used “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg back in December to do a bunch of fun activities.  I hope you don’t mind me sharing Christmas related activities in April 🙂  Hopefully you can just pin these ideas and use them at Christmas time.

Of course, we read the book- actually we listened to the CD of the book.  Then we had a great time making some Polar Express trains.

Polar Express Crafts

Hunter made a train using different shapes.  He also sprinkled glitter on his paper.  While that was not exactly planned (ha!) it looked like falling snow.

Polar Express Crafts

Hunter’s finished train.

Polar Express Crafts

Hailey used oil pastels to draw a train.

Polar Express Crafts

She colored it in using Christmas colors.

Polar Express Crafts

Hailey’s finished train.  She also sprinkled glitter on her paper to look like snow.  She didn’t use glue, she just sprinkled it on and it looks great.

To finish off our Polar Express theme we had a party at the end of the week.

Polar Express Party

I used painter’s tape to make a railroad track on the floor.  We used some cardboard boxes from some of my online shopping to build a train.

Polar Express Party

Hunter and Hailey sitting in the train.

Polar Express Party

Hunter and Hailey made some snow globes.  (Of course, they had to wear their pajamas for a Polar Express party.)

Polar Express Party

Hailey decided to make her snowman look like Olaf from Frozen.  They turned out cute.

Polar Express Party

Then they made a little graham cracker train.

Polar Express Party

It only lasted a few minutes before they started eating it 🙂

Then it was movie time!  Hunter and Hailey took their seats in our train.

Polar Express Party

I punched their tickets

Polar Express Party

They also had little jingle bells, which we could all hear 😉

Polar Express Party

Then I passed out hot chocolate and popcorn while they watched the movie.  It was a super fun day!
