Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice

We had a lot of fun reading Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice by Steve Metzger and doing some great activities to go along with the story.

I put out some water and added some blue ice cubes and some penguins.  Hunter loved this and played with it for a very long time!

I froze some water on a pan so that the penguins could go ice skating.  Hunter didn’t care for this activity too much at first, but once he got into it he really enjoyed it.  He even requested to play with it again later.

We propped up the ice and tested to see which toys would slide down the ice.  We tried things other than the penguins, but I didn’t get a picture of that.

penguin4

I made a penguin out of an oatmeal box and provided some fish.

penguin5

Hunter tried to throw the fish into the penguin’s belly.

penguin6

I made some shape penguins and laminated them.

penguin7

As I called out a shape, Hunter had to find it and stand on the correct shape.

Then I added numbers to the penguins

We counted out the appropriate number of fish and put them on the penguin with that number on it.

It was another week of fun here at Our Crafts N Things!

Week In Review

Feb

This post is a little late, as all of my posts have been lately, but here it is.  This is kind of my attempt to finally catch up!

History/Geography:

Our Crafts N Things

We finished up reading this book, which both Hailey and I really enjoyed reading.  The story of Martin Luther King, Jr hit me a little bit differently this time than it has other times.  He was 39 when he was killed, which is how old Rich is, so it made me think of what it must have felt for his family.  Hailey kept saying, “But why would someone want to kill him?”  It was just so hard for her to understand.

Our Crafts N Things

When we finished the book, Hailey did this little book report.  On the head she wrote the title, author and illustrator of the book.  On one arm she wrote about where he was born.  On the other arm she used 3 adjectives to describe Dr. King.  In the middle she made a small timeline of his life.  On one leg she wrote about some of his accomplishments and on the other leg she wrote what she would ask him if she could talk to him today.

Language Arts:

Hailey loves to practice her spelling words on Spellingcity.  I have been considering a change in how I am teaching spelling.  Each week Hailey gets 10 spelling words, we practice them all week and then she takes a test on Friday.  She usually gets all of the words correct on her test, but I don’t really think this is teaching her how to spell.  So, I have been looking over lots of different spelling curriculum choices and I finally ordered All About Spelling.  I am hoping this will be a good change for us.

Our Crafts N Things

We finished up learning about penguins in science last week, so this week Hailey wrote a little research paper about penguins.  She spent time thinking, inquiring, planning and finally writing.

Hailey doing a little research about the Emperor Penguins that she decided to write about.

Here is her completed paper.

Science:

Our Crafts N Things

Hailey has been learning all about magnets in science.

Our Crafts N Things

Working on some predictions about what will stick to a magnet.

Our Crafts N Things

Hailey doing a little magnet magic- making the paperclip move around all by itself on a paper plate.

Our Crafts N Things

We also did a little experiment to make scissors magnetic.  You rub a magnet across the scissors- making sure to go only in one direction (do not rub it back and forth).  The scissors will become magnetic and will be able to pick up a small object, such as a paperclip.

Our Crafts N Things

Hailey also did some testing to see if a magnet could attract another magnet through a variety of materials.  We were both surprised to see it work through a piece of cardboard.

Our Crafts N Things

We were also surprised to see it worked through Hailey’s sneaker.
