Sand Art
Jul
I did several beach themed activities with Hailey. And since the beach has sand I had a crazy fabulous idea to do some sand art. With my 21 month old.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Paper (I used card stock), sand and glue.
It started out pretty good. Hailey did have to mix the two colors together and play with that for a little while. Then she sprinkled some on her name. (The mark on her arm is a left over tattoo.)
Then the fun started. And the sand was everywhere.
Hailey spent a very long time pushing the sand around and decorating her paper. When she was done we went straight to the bathtub. When we came out Rich had cleaned up the entire mess the sand had made. And it was a huge mess. (Thanks Rich!)
The finished sand art.
This project actually was a lot of fun. And Hailey spent a very long time working on it. I will do this again with her. BUT, it will be done outside.
Fish Craft
Jul
You must admit that the titles I come up with for my posts are quite original. I guess that’s as good as it’s going to get since I’m usually working on my blogs around midnight.
Anyhoo, today I am sharing with you a super-duper, easy-peasy craft that relates to the beach theme we are doing this week.
Here’s what you need:
- Tissue paper
- Contact paper cut into the shape of a fish
I cut up the tissue paper into some little squares so it would be a bit more manageable for Hailey’s little hands.
And now for the fun- tear up the tissue paper. This is excellent for strengthening the muscles in the hands which are very important for those fine-motor skills. (As a side note- the marks you see on Hailey’s arms are my attempts at re-doing her tattoo’s that had faded away since our 4th of July celebration. It just broke her heart that her tattoos were gone, so I did my best to re-do them.)
Stick the torn up tissue paper on the fish shaped contact paper.
Add another piece of contact paper to hold all of the tissue paper in. Add a cute little face. And you have an adorable little fish.
You can display it on a window, or let your ornery toddler carry it around for the rest of the day.
Going to the Beach
Jul
We’re not really going to the beach but I am doing several beach themed activities with Hailey this week. I had wanted to post this yesterday but for some reason I couldn’t upload any pictures last night. Rich has it all fixed up for me now though, so I’m back in business!
The first beach related activity I did was show Hailey what a beach would be like.
I have just a simple Rubbermaid container that can be filled with sand or water (or any kind of sensory tub activity). It’s a lot cheaper than buying a sand/water table and it works just great. When we’re done I can just put the top on it and put it away. So, here is it with some damp sand and sea shells.
I hid the sea shells in the sand and let Hailey find them. At first I made it very obvious where the sea shells were so that she would understand what we were looking for. Then I actually hid them and she had to dig to find them.
Then we built a sand castle.
I dug out an H in the sand and then had Hailey fill it with sea shells.
When we came inside we sat on a beach towel and read some books. Hailey had an absolute blast.
That was our first day of beach activities. Be sure to come back to see the other beach related activities that we are doing this week.
