Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

It has been a while since I posted about what Hailey has been doing in school.  I am having a hard time figuring out how to fit everything in that I want to do these days.  Having a newborn in the house sure does make it harder to get everything done.  She is a super good baby, there is just so much more to do.  Anyway, here is a quick review of what we have been up to over the last several weeks.

Language Arts:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey has been learning how to diagram sentences in language arts.  Actually, I have been learning it too because I never learned in school how to do it.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Working on her cursive handwriting.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey finished reading Capyboppy and her assignment when she finished the book was to create what a DVD cover for a movie of Capyboppy would look like.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We also finished reading Mrs. Pigglewiggle.  When she finished that book she had to write a friendly letter telling someone about the book.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

She drew a picture of her favorite part of the book- which was the “fighter-quarrelers cure” where Mrs. Pigglewiggle told the parents to argue and act like their kids were acting to cure all the fighting the kids were doing.  We really loved reading Mrs. Pigglewiggle, it is definitely a favorite!

Science:

We are still having a lot of fun with our science curriculum.  We are using Science in the Beginning and it is working well for us.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey was doing an experiment where she had to put a white piece of a plastic garbage bag and a black piece of a plastic garbage bag in the sunlight for 5 minutes and then check to see what happened.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey has also been busy working in her science journal.

History:

We are using Veritas Press and Story of the World for history and both are working great for us.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

After Hailey learned about the Tower of Babel, she did a craft to create her own using the idea I found here.

We have moved on to learning about Egypt and there are so many fun activities to do with Egypt that it is very easy to get carried away!

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey made a model of the Nile.  In the middle is the Nile and on the sides we put some grass seed.  Hailey also added some large rocks to represent mountains.  Each week will flood our Nile to represent how it flooded every year.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Then Hailey also used some clay and wrote her name using Cuneiform.

Other:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We took a field trip to learn how donuts and apple cider are made.  Hailey and Hunter enjoyed trying a delicious donut and some yummy cider!

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We saw donuts being made.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We watched how cider is made.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Here is a look at some of the things Hailey has been learning:

 Bible:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey loves Grapevine for Bible and says it is one of her favorite subjects.  She drew a picture of her favorite part of the lesson from the week on this page.

Language Arts:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey is reading Cappyboppy, which we are both enjoying.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

She is also working on learning cursive, which she is not enjoying.  I think this is the worst part of our day- she hates it 🙁

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We did some dictionary review.

Science:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We are both loving our science curriculum!  There is always a short and easy experiment and we both really liked the one from this day.  We positioned a DVD behind a lit candle and we could see the rainbow.  It was so neat and really taught the lesson of the day (about how white light is made up of all of the colors)!

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Here is one of the pages in Hailey’s science journal as she learns about how light works and how we see colors.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We also had a lesson about how when you look at something like a red flower why you only see the color red, so Hailey drew a picture in her journal about that too.  She drew all of the colors of the rainbow coming out of a light source and then the red light being reflected off to the person’s eye.  The rest of the colors are absorbed, so we don’t see them.

Geography:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey learned about Connecticut and used her Little Passports magazine to do some activities.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

She also used her USA Sticker book to learn more about Connecticut.

Just for fun:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Last week we started third grade.  Which is really hard to believe, because I’m pretty sure it was just last month that we started second grade.  But apparently it’s been a whole year.  Anyway…

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

On Wednesday we had our first day of homeschool co-0p.  So here is Hailey all ready to go to co-op.  She was so excited to back and see all of her friends from last year.

Then, on Thursday we had our first day of school at home.  Hailey, Hunter, and Harper were all excited for the day to start!

Since it was the first week of school and we only had 2 days of school I don’t have a lot to share, but here are a few of the things that we did:

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Our calendar board is much simpler this year and so far that is working very well for us.  Hailey is doing everything on the board except the weather, which Hunter is doing.  Last year there was just way too much on our calendar board and it took forever to do everything.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

As part of the beginning of our day, Hailey is also doing a page from Critical and Creative Thinking each day.  So far she is enjoying the activities.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

On the first day of school Hailey filled out a Back to School survey about a variety of things she likes to do.  She did one on the first day of school last year too, and I hope to remember to do it every year since it will be fun to look back at them in the years to come.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Hailey also drew a self-portrait, which is another thing we do every year.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

Another back to school activity we did was this All About-Me Robot.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We are using Grapevine for Bible this year and so far Hailey and I both really like it.  The simple drawings (that even I can do) make it much easier to remember the information being taught.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

For math we are using Teaching Textbooks and Hailey loves it!  What a change from last year.  She cheers when it’s time to do math and that was certainly never the case before.  I hope her enthusiasm continues.

Our Crafts N Things Third Grade

We’re using Science in the Beginning and Hailey really liked that too.  We are doing it every other day, so we only had science once.  We did a fun experiment and read a short lesson.  Then Hailey did an entry in her science notebook.

So far, so good.  Let’s hope that continues.

Third Grade Curriculum 2014-2105

Aug

Here is a look at our plans for third grade:

Third Grade Curriculum

Language Arts:

Third Grade Curriculum

We are using Rod and Staff Building English 3- we used level 2 last year and Hailey really liked it. (4x per week)
All About Spelling (4x per week)
A Reason for Handwriting (4x per week)
Daily 6- Trait Writing (4x per week)
Critical and Creative Thinking Activities (4x per week)

Third Grade Curriculum

Here are some of the books I will read to Hailey this year, although chances are good she will end up being the one reading some of them.

Third Grade Curriculum

Here are some of the books Hailey will read aloud to me.  She has actually already read a good portion of them this summer, so I am going to need to find some more for her to read during the school year.

History/Geography:

Third Grade Curriculum

I had purchased Story of the World to use for History, as well as History Pockets to go with it.  Then we reviewed Veritas Press Old  Testament and Ancient Egypt and Hailey loved it and begged to continue using it this fall.  Since both cover ancient history I am going to use both- it will be nice to use Veritas Press because it is online and won’t require much work on my part- and with a newborn I know that will be very helpful.  But, I will add in some of the reading and activities from Story of the World to go along with it. (4x per week)

Third Grade Curriculum

For geography we are using Daily Geography Practice and the United States Sticker Book.  Hailey also receives Little Passports USA and Highlights USA, so each week we will focus on one state.  (2x per week)

Bible:

Third Grade Curriculum

We are going to try out Grapevine this year and see how we like that.  We’re starting with Part 1- Creation to Jacob and will move on to part 2 when we finish that if we are enjoying it. (4x per week)

Science:

Third Grade Curriculum

We are going to use Science in the Beginning this year and add in some fun unit studies along the way.  (2x per week)

Math:

Third Grade Curriculum

Teaching Textbooks 4 is my plan for math.  (4x per week)

Health:

Third Grade Curriculum

We are using Health, Safety, and Manners from A Beka for Health. (2x per week)

So, that is my plan for third grade.  I am sure things will change along the way, but this is the plan for now.

Be sure to like me on Facebook and follow me on Pinterest so you don’t miss any of our fun activities.
