Will the Groundhog See His Shadow?

Hailey’s prediction is that yes, the groundhog will see his shadow.  Her reasoning is that if you look outside and see all the snow it seems like winter is not leaving anytime soon.

Hailey painted a styrofoam ball brown.  I added a little bit of glue to the paint otherwise it chips right off the ball.

Then on a cup she added flowers to one side.

Once the paint was dry she made the brown ball look like a groundhog by adding eyes, nose and mouth.  We put the groundhog onto a craft stick.

I cut a slit in the bottom of the cup.  The groundhog can pop out of his hole and see his shadow, meaning more winter…

or not see his shadow, meaning an early spring.

Groundhog Craft

I wanted to do some groundhog activities with Hailey and found one that I thought looked cute.  But we didn’t have all the necessary supplies and the weather was bad- so we had to make do with what we had.

Instead of a large brown pompom for his head, we used 4 pieces of cotton- Hailey painted them brown and glued them together.  We didn’t have any little brown pompoms for his ears and nose either- so we used pink instead.  We stuck it onto a large craft stick.

Hailey painted a toilet paper roll brown and put the groundhog inside.  He can move up and down to peek out of his hole.

We also played a matching game where you have to match an animal to its shadow.

Letter of the Week- Letter P

Our letter of the week last week was the letter P.  Here are some of the activities we did:

We looked through fliers and found things that started with the letter P and Hailey cut them out.

Hailey colored letter P  word cards, cut the pictures out and then glued them onto index cards.

We do these for every letter.  When it’s all dry I staple it together and make a little book.

I saw a cute P is for Peacock over at No Time for Flashcards.  Hailey used her Do-a-Dot markers to decorate the feathers.

The completed P is for Peacock.

Hailey practiced writing the letter P and circled words that started with P.

We made a piano- Hailey drew some lines on a white piece of paper.

She cut some black strips of paper and glued those on.

The completed P is for piano.

We added the letter P to our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree.

Hailey practiced her shapes on this pizza coloring paper.

Then we made a pretend pizza- Hailey painted a paper plate red then added all sorts of toppings.

The finished pizza.
