Poppins Book Nook- Animal Theme

PoppinsBookNook

The theme for this months Poppins Book Nook was animals.  Since we were learning about Thanksgiving this month, I decided to go with a turkey for our animal.

Fun With Turkeys

We used a few different books to go with our theme.  We read “A Turkey for Thanksgiving” by Eve Bunting, which is a super cute story!  Then we read 2 non-fiction books- “All About Turkeys” by Jim Arnosky and “Turkeys that Fly and Turkeys That Don’t” by Allen Fowler.  We learned so much from those 2 books!

Fun With Turkeys

As we read the non-fiction books about turkeys, we added feathers to this turkey.  Each feather has an interesting fact about turkeys.

Fun With Turkeys

I had Hailey write in her journal pretending to be a turkey and giving reasons why she should not be eaten for Thanksgiving dinner.

Turkey Fun

We also made some turkey crafts, you can see the full post here.  These are the cute hats we made.

Turkey Fun

Hailey made this turkey with a cute poem on it.

Poppins Book Nook- Seasons

28
Oct

PoppinsBookNook

The theme this month for the Poppins Book Nook is seasons.

leaf8

We read the book “The reasons for the Seasons” by Gail Gibbons and learned why the seasons change.

Apple Unit

Since the current season is fall and we have been working on a fall unit study, I decided to focus on fall and leaves.  This binder has the different mini-units that we are covering this fall- apples, leaves, etc.

Poppins Book Nook

Each mini-unit has a section in the binder.  This is the leaf section with this printable from Enchanted Homeschooling Mom glued onto a divider for our leaf section.

Poppins Book Nook

Since we made a lapbook for our apple study, I decided to do something a little smaller for our leaf study.  Hailey glued these few activities onto the back side of the divider for the leaf mini-unit.

Poppins Book Nook

The Leaves book comes from Enchanted Learning.

Poppins Book Nook

You can find the accordion style book about why leaves change color here.

Poppins Book Nook

I wrote leaf related vocabulary words on leaf shaped cards and we did several activities with those.

Poppins Book Nook

There are many pages of work that Hailey did in this mini-unit.  This leaf observation page comes from Enchanted Homeschooling Mom and the super fun leaf unit she has available.

Poppins Book Nook

Hailey also did a leaf rubbing.

Fall Tree Craft

She made this Fall Tree Craft, using a leaf to paint.

Fall Tree Craft

We also made this Fall Tree Handprint Craft.

Fall

Hailey and Hunter dressed up in the color of chlorophyll one day.  It was amazing how excited Hailey was about doing this and how quickly she got ready for school!

Poppins Book Nook- Fairy Tale Theme

26
Aug

PoppinsBookNook

The theme for the Poppins Book Book this month was fairy tales, which is a perfect theme for us!  The only problem was- which book to pick!  Before we could decide on a book, we had to find out exactly what a makes a book a fairy tale.

Fariy Tale Activities

I drew this lovely castle… I thought I was doing a pretty good job drawing it, but while I was working on it Hailey said, “Are you sure you don’t want to just print one?  I don’t want you to embarrass yourself on the internet.”  She did admit I did a pretty good job once it was done though.  She colored it in after I finished drawing it.

Fariy Tale Activities

Then we went over what makes a story a fairy tale.  Once we knew what needed to be in a book to have it be considered a fairy tale she decided she wanted to read Cinderella.

Fariy Tale Activities

Hailey did a great job reading “Cinderella” to Hunter.

Fariy Tale Activities

Then we decided to make Cinderella’s carriage.  Hailey and Hunter painted a pumpkin blue.

Fariy Tale Activities

Then Hailey added some glitter.

Fariy Tale Activities

Our finished Cinderella Carriage.

Fariy Tale Activities

Then Hailey wrote her own fairy tale.

Poppins Book Nook- Ocean/Beach Theme

29
Jul

The theme for the Poppins Book Nook for the month of July is ocean/beach.  This worked out perfectly for us because Hailey really showed a big interest in learning about the ocean after our recent trip to the beach.

Dolphin Unit

Dolphin Unit

The first thing Hailey did was make a KWL chart… she listed the things she knows and the things she wants to know.

Ocean Unit

Then we got some books out of the library… some ocean related books…

Dolphin Unit

and some dolphin related books.  There were just so many good ones I couldn’t decide what to pick!

Dolphin Unit

We really enjoyed the books, but this was our favorite.  There were so many interesting facts and bright, colorful pictures.

Dolphin Unit

Hailey is working on a unit study about dolphins.  We didn’t finish it in time to include it in this post, but I hope to post about later this week as we are almost done.

Dolphin Unit

She is also creating a dolphin lapbook, which is not done either.  Come back later this week to see a post about that.

Dolphin Unit Snack

We made a yummy treat to go along with our ocean theme… Hunter ate his before I could take a picture.

Dolphin Unit Snack

They turned out cute!  It’s just a graham cracker with blue frosting, some goldfish and some sprinkles.

Dolphin Unit Snack

Hailey was pleased with the results too 🙂

Of course, we had to make a craft, and we decided to make a killer whale.

Dolphin Unit Craft

You’ll need:
paper plate
black paint
black construction paper
something to paint with
pencil
googly eyes
glue
yarn

Dolphin Unit Craft

Hunter saw me setting up to do an activity and he got super excited to get started!

Dolphin Unit Craft

The first thing we did was draw a line with a pencil on the plates, showing how far we wanted the black paint to go.  Then Hunter and Hailey painted their plates.

Dolphin Unit Craft

Add some googly eyes

Dolphin Unit Craft

Some yarn for a mouth

Dolphin Unit Craft

Our completed killer whales.

If you’re looking for more beach/ocean related activities I have posted several this month- check them out!
