D is for Dinosaur

When learning about the letter D, what could be more fun than turning it into a dinosaur theme?  I can’t think of anything better for a 4 year old boy.  Hunter loved learning the letter D and all about dinosaurs.  This was definitely his favorite unit all year.

 Hunter’s letter D bin was full of fun things for the week.  Harper kept taking her diaper out and putting it away haha, she didn’t understand why it was in the bin.

 I printed out this letter D page from these preschool printables and then Hunter had to make the D using pattern blocks.

He spent lots of time playing with the little dinosaurs.  We used them for some math games too, like sorting, patterns, counting, etc.

Finding and coloring the letter D.

We used painters tape to show how long some of the dinosaurs were.  Hunter was pretty impressed with how big they were.  We weren’t able to do the really big dinosaurs because they were bigger than our house!

At the end of the tape I put a little fact card about the dinosaur the tape was representing.

We made dinosaur fossils by pressing little dinosaurs into modeling clay.

What would a dinosaur unit be without making a volcano?  Hunter liked doing the volcano but when the “lava” came out of the mountain and touched his dinosaurs he was not happy.  So, the rest of our volcano fun had to be done without the dinosaurs nearby.

We had a little fossil dig to look for dinosaur bones.

Hailey helped too, it was actually really hard to get the bones out.

Then Hailey and Hunter took turns hiding some dinosaur bones in the sandbox and then searching for them.

Learning about dinosaurs was our favorite unit this year!

Preschool- Letter E

Apparently, I didn’t take very many pictures of our letter E activities because I don’t have a lot to share.  So, here are some of the activities we did for the letter E.

Hunter practiced his cutting by cutting apart some elephants.

Hunter eats scrambled eggs for breakfast every day so I cut his eggs into an E shape.

He made this “E is for earth” craft. First he colored a coffee filter with blue and green, then we sprayed water on it so that the colors would run together.

I made these cute chocolate eggs.  I just melted some white chocolate, then put a yellow M&M in the middle.

Hailey hid some plastic eggs in our backyard and Hunter did an egg hunt and found all of the eggs.

We only have letter R left to complete Hunter’s name.  Then we will take a break from letters until we start back to school in the fall.  Our focus this summer will be on reading lots of books and doing activities related to what we are reading.

Tot School

Hunter is 22 1/2 months old.

We had a fun week at Tot School!

I just have to say that as you look at the pictures you might notice that Hunter is wearing the same shirt every day.  He has recently become quite attached to his Lightning McQeen pajama shirt.  He insists on wearing all. of. the. time!  I decided that if we are not leaving the house I am not fighting that battle with him.  So, that is why he always has it on 🙂

Hunter’s letter this week was the letter D.

He made a “D is for Dinosaur” using an idea I saw at Homeschool Creations.

Hunter loves the do-a-dot markers and had fun stamping the letter D from COAH.

We have been learning all about bats, so Hunter had fun making a bat craft.

We learned how a mother bat uses her sense of smell to find her baby bat.  I dipped cotton balls into different things like vinegar, vanilla, coffee and perfume.  I let Hailey pick a “baby” and then I blind folded her and had her find her “baby” using her sense of smell.  We had a lot of fun doing that, so Hunter wanted to be a part too.  He loved smelling the different cotton balls!

Hailey just started a spider unit and this was our first experiment.  We learned how spiders eat their prey by injecting venom into it, which turns the insect into liquid and then the spider drinks the food.  So, Hunter wanted to do the experiment too!  We put our prey (a sugar cube) in a cup.  Then we injected it with venom (water) and drank our prey.  They both loved it!

We made a spider glyph, which you can see here.  Hunter made his the way he wanted and didn’t really care about the directions 😉  I love how his spider turned out!

Letter of the Week- Letter D

Our letter last week was the letter Dd.  Here are some of the activities that we did.

Hailey used the Do-a-Dot art to decorate the letter Dd.

We played with Playdough and used a cookie cutter D to cut out the letter D.

For our alphabet book we made a D is for Doctor bag that we saw over at Homeschool Creations.

You’ll need: white, red and black construction paper, scissors, tape, glue and some (child safe) doctor supplies.

Here is Hailey working on putting the medical supplies into her doctor bag.  (She was sick last week, so this particular day happened to be a pajama day!)
