Week in Review

Wondering what we’ve been up to?  Here’s a few things we have been working on:

Language Arts:

Week in Review

Hailey finished up working on a story that she has been writing.  She wrote up a rough draft, we typed it, and then she illustrated each page.  She was very proud of her work!  She read her story to Hunter and he really enjoyed it.

Week in Review

We have been having a lot of fun doing an author unit study about Tomie dePaola from Around the Kampfire.  Hailey drew pictures of the main characters in some of his books and we discussed the traits that each of those characters have.

Science:

We started a fun unit all about caterpillars and butterflies.

Week in Review

Each day we read a different book about caterpillars/butterflies.

Week in Review

The first craft we made were these cute caterpillars- which are simply pom poms glued onto a clothespin with googly eyes added.

Week in Review

Then next day we put our caterpillars into toilet paper rolls and wrapped yarn around the outside- this represented a chrysalis.

Week in Review

Hailey and Hunter colored coffee filters with washable markers,

Week in Review

then sprayed them with water.  The colors all bled together and looked really pretty.

Week in Review

We used the coffee filters to turn our clothespin caterpillars into butterflies.

Week in Review

We sang a song about a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.  Hailey and Hunter loved the song and the hand motions to go with it.  Here are the words that we sang:

I saw a caterpillar
climbing up a tree.
He wiggled and he wiggled,
he wiggled right at me.
I put him in a box,
“Stay right there,” I said.
But, when I opened up the box
a butterfly instead.
I couldn’t do it,
even if I tried.
Only God in heaven
could make a butterfly.

Week in Review

Hailey made this pretty sun catcher butterfly.

Week in Review

Of course, we read more books.

Week in Review

Hailey and Hunter worked hard on making the life cycle of a caterpillar.

Week in Review

Here is Hailey’s completed life cycle project- from egg to larva (caterpillar) to pupa (chrysalis) to butterfly.

Week in Review

We watched a Magic School Bus episode about butterflies.  We also learned about metamorphosis on Brain Pop.

Math:

Week in Review

Hailey has been working on multiplication and we played a memory game using the math facts she is learning.  For example- one of the cards might say 7×3 and the matching card would say 21.  It was fun to play and I love it when Hailey asks to play again!

Tot School

Hunter is 29 months.

Tot School

I can’t believe we are almost done with the alphabet!  We will be going through the alphabet again in the fall when we start preschool… well that is the plan at least.  We will see how it goes with a newborn in the house 🙂

Letter U activities:

(Printables for the letter U are from 1+1+1=1 and Confessions of a Homeschooler.)

Tot School

Hunter used water colors to paint his letter U paper.

Tot School

Hunter loves these pages- he is getting better about stamping the marker in the circles.

Tot School

He really enjoyed stamping it hard enough to make the ink splatter (and smear all over his arms).

Tot School

 U is for Umbrella

Shapes:

Our shape this week was the square.

Tot School

Hunter put square pieces of tissue paper onto a square piece of contact paper, that we made into a sun catcher.

Tot School

Hunter had some square crackers for a snack.

Sensory:

Tot School

Hunter played with these foam insect creatures in his sensory bin.

Tot School

Another day I put these rocks meant for a fish tank in his sensory bin.  He was playing with them so nicely that I left the room for a minute to put a load of laundry in the dryer.  Soon, I heard Hailey yelling.  When I came back to see what was going on, Hunter was pouring these little rocks down the back of her shirt.

Tot School

When we came home from Disney World I decided it was time to get down to the potty training business.  So, Hunter put on some underwear and did an excited dance around the living room to celebrate.  He did really well and only had a couple of accidents.  For the most part he went on the toilet and even told me once when he had to go.  He was so excited!  The next morning when he woke up he said, “Today I want to wear my Minnie and Mickey diapers.”  And he has not wanted anything to do with the underwear again.

Tot School

We have been having fun learning all about worms and at the end of our worm unit, we made dirt pudding with worms (chocolate pudding, crushed Oreos and gummy worms).  Hunter loved it!

Tot School

We learned how important worms are to the earth, so when we finished observing our worms, we let them go in our garden.

Tot School

Hailey helping Hunter practice his shapes during calendar time.

Tot School

Hunter loves books!!  I love how he goes and finds a book and lays down to read it!

Stop by 1+1+1=1 to see what the other tots were up to this week.

We had some great weather and it was perfect for getting outside to do a little reading.

Science:

We finished up our worm unit.  Any of the printables you see are from The Razzle Dazzle Classroom worm unit.

Week In Review

Hailey created an All About Worms book using the information she learned during our unit.

Week In Review

Here she is drawing a picture to show how worms help the earth.

Week In Review

Hailey drew an observation of her worm habitat on the day she made it and then again a week later.

Week In Review

We finished up our unit by making yummy dirt pudding with worms (chocolate pudding, crushed Oreos, and gummy worms).

Week In Review

Hunter and Hailey both loved it!

Week In Review

Hailey’s finished book about worms.

Here is a little peek at what we’ve been up to:

Language Arts:

Week In Review

Hailey has been working hard on writing a story.  First she wrote up a rough draft, then we typed the story, and finally she is working on illustrating it.

Week In Review

We have been having a lot of fun doing an author unit study about Tomie dePaola from Around the Kampfire.  In this activity, Hailey made her own version of Tommy- the boy from the book The Art Lesson.  We talked about how an author can tell us how he/she is feeling by the things that happen in a book.  For example, Hailey though that Tomie dePaola thinks that people should be themselves because in the story Tommy is told that a real artist would never copy.

Week In Review

As we read through the books we will add to our gallery of characters- for now this is Hailey’s drawing of Tommy from The Art Lesson.

Week In Review

This is the cute folder we made to keep all of Hailey’s work in from this unit.

Science:

Week In Review

We are learning all about worms during science.  Hailey checking out some worms that we used for various activities.

Week In Review

Hunter and Hailey made little habitats for the worms to live in.  I love the look on Hailey’s face as she is picking up a worm to put in her jar.

Week In Review

The jars had oatmeal on the bottom, then we layered them with sand and dirt.  We put worms on the top and then added some leaves.  We observed them and watched them build their tunnels.

Week In Review

Hailey has decided that she wants to add a weekly baking lesson- so she made us some delicious cupcakes.
