Expedition Earth- United Kingdom

I am behind in posting about our adventures with Expedition Earth, so I am posting twice this week about this amazing curriculum to try to get caught up.

Expedition Earth- United Kingdom

The next stop we made was in the United Kingdom. (We are not doing all of the countries right now, we are just covering the ones we will see when we go to Epcot in a couple of months.)

Expedition Earth- United Kingdom

We started out with the usual mapping activity.  Hailey found the UK on the map (we also reviewed China and Japan) and filled out this paper.

Expedition Earth- United Kingdom

Hailey colored the flag and learned what the colors of the flag represent.

Expedition Earth- United Kingdom

Hailey learned about Big Ben and we learned that Big Ben is actually the name for the big bell, not for the tower.  She made a mini Big Ben.

Here is a close up of her Big Ben.

Hailey also designed a postcard for the UK- she drew Big Ben and made a flag on her postcard.

Expedition Earth- United Kingdom

Hailey learned about Stonehenge and how it has changed throughout the years.  She used some blocks to make her own recreation of Stonehenge.

Up next will be France.

Expedition Earth- Japan

Our next stop on our Expedition Earth adventure was Japan.

Expedition Earth- Japan

Hailey learned about the Itsukushima Torii Shrine.  She thought it was pretty neat because she has seen a replica of it in Epcot.  We made our own little Itsukushma Shrine with play-doh.

Expedition Earth- Japan

Hailey’s finished Itsukushima Shrine.

Expedition Earth- Japan

We read about Daisuke, a child from Japan and learned what it is like for children who live there.

Expedition Earth- Japan

 Hailey made an origami cat.

Expedition Earth- Japan

We learned about Japanese Rock Gardens- why they have them and how they are made.  Hailey and Hunter each made their own rock garden.

 Hunter’s finished rock garden.

Expedition Earth- China

We are absolutely loving the Expedition Earth curriculum we started last month.  I have gotten a bit behind in my posting, so it’s been a little while since we actually learned about China.  Here are some of the activities we did while learning about China:

Expedition Earth- China

We read several books all about China.

Expedition Earth- China

Hailey used Google Translate to find out how to say all kinds of things in Chinese.

Expedition Earth- China

We are reading “Children Just Like Me” and Hailey really enjoys this part.  She loves learning what kids her age are doing in other countries.

Expedition Earth- China

Hailey and Hunter decorated some Chinese lanterns.

They also made Chinese fans.

Expedition Earth- China

We also made the Great Wall of China- they started out by painting a foam board.

Then we built our wall.

This project was so much fun!

We finished off our week in China by going out for some Chinese food.  Hailey did really good using chop sticks!

We are absolutely loving this curriculum.  It has become our favorite time of the day!!

We are planning a trip to Disney World in a couple of months, which we are very excited about!  Before we go I thought it would be fun to do a little study of each of the 11 countries we will see while visiting Epcot.  So, we started using Expedition Earth since it covers 10 of the 11 countries.

The first week we just did a brief study of the continents.

Expedition Earth

We started out playing a little “Continent Hop,” which both kids loved!

Expedition Earth

After we read “Me on the Map” by Joan Sweeney, Hailey worked on her own book that goes along with it.  It really helps to understand where we are in relation to the world.  It’s currently free on Curriclick.

Expedition Earth

Hailey’s favorite activity was making the continents using salt dough.

Expedition Earth

We put wax paper down on the table, then put printables of the continents underneath the wax paper so that Hailey could easily get the shape of the continents correct.

Expedition Earth

Then we painted the continents green.

Expedition Earth

Our completed continents.

We had so much fun our first week using Expedition Earth!!
