Expedition Earth- Italy
Apr
Our latest adventure in Expedition Earth was our trip to Italy.
Of course, we read several books (we just looked through some of them, they are all pretty long) about Italy.
Hailey stamped her passport (and I am obviously a few weeks behind in my posting).
We learned about Roman Numerals. Hailey wanted me to test her and see if she could get them all correct- which she did.
We talked about Mt. Vesuvius and watched some Youtube videos of volcanos. Then, of course, we had to make our own volcano. Hailey was obviously more impressed than Hunter.
Hailey built her own version of the Roman Colosseum.
We learned about Michelangelo, and watched a BrainPop show about him. Then, I taped paper under Hunter’s table so that Hailey and Hunter could pretend to be Michelangelo.
Of course, we ended our study of Italy by going out for some Italian food. Yummy!

Expedition Earth- France
Apr
Have I mentioned how much we love the Expedition Earth curriculum? It’s definitely my favorite part of the day!
This week we learned all about France. As always Hailey reviewed all of the other countries we have been studying on the map and found the new one as well.
We had a cheese tasting party.
We also learned that in France they like to have a bowl of hot chocolate and then the dip a variety of breads into the hot chocolate. We decided to dip donuts into the hot chocolate- that’s bread, right?!?! Hunter loved it!
Hailey definitely enjoyed her donut and hot chocolate too.
We built an Eiffel Tower
Hailey posing with the Eiffel Tower and pointing to France on the map.
Hailey loves when we read about the children from the country we are learning about. She gets out some paper and takes notes about the child- she just finds it fascinating to learn how they live.
We learned that a french scientist discovered how to make inexpensive soap, which in turn meant people could afford to buy it and use it. So, we had some fun making our own soap.
The finished soap
To end out the week, Hailey made some chocolate truffles. They were super delicious!!

Expedition Earth- United Kingdom
Mar
I am behind in posting about our adventures with Expedition Earth, so I am posting twice this week about this amazing curriculum to try to get caught up.
The next stop we made was in the United Kingdom. (We are not doing all of the countries right now, we are just covering the ones we will see when we go to Epcot in a couple of months.)
We started out with the usual mapping activity. Hailey found the UK on the map (we also reviewed China and Japan) and filled out this paper.
Hailey colored the flag and learned what the colors of the flag represent.
Hailey learned about Big Ben and we learned that Big Ben is actually the name for the big bell, not for the tower. She made a mini Big Ben.
Here is a close up of her Big Ben.
Hailey also designed a postcard for the UK- she drew Big Ben and made a flag on her postcard.
Hailey learned about Stonehenge and how it has changed throughout the years. She used some blocks to make her own recreation of Stonehenge.
Up next will be France.

Expedition Earth- Japan
Mar
Our next stop on our Expedition Earth adventure was Japan.
Hailey learned about the Itsukushima Torii Shrine. She thought it was pretty neat because she has seen a replica of it in Epcot. We made our own little Itsukushma Shrine with play-doh.
Hailey’s finished Itsukushima Shrine.
We read about Daisuke, a child from Japan and learned what it is like for children who live there.
Hailey made an origami cat.
We learned about Japanese Rock Gardens- why they have them and how they are made. Hailey and Hunter each made their own rock garden.
Hunter’s finished rock garden.
Hailey’s finished rock garden.
Hailey also made some colorful carp.
The completed colorful carp.
We finished out our week by going out for some yummy Japanese food.
We had so much fun in Japan!!
