Count the Stars

21
Feb

Earlier this week we did a test run of what a homeschooling day would be like since we are considering homeschooling next year.  We had a Bible story as part of our day.  Since Hailey has been learning about Abraham at church I decided to do a lesson about that.  We read the story about when God told Abraham to count the stars and that would be how many descendants he would have.  Hailey did a really simple craft to go with the story.

Our Crafts ~N~ Things

First Hailey colored stars all over her paper using a crayon.  I wanted her to use a white crayon but she insisted on using yellow.

Then she painted with black water color all over the page to represent the night sky.  It turned out cute!

Cross Window Mosaic

Continuing with our Easter theme we made this mosaic today.

I put out a piece of contact paper.  Hailey put a cross on it and then added pieces of construction paper in a variety of colors.

She added lots of colors.

I cut it to look like a window in church.

Hailey hung it up on our sliding glass door.

She loved how it turned out!

Palm Branches

We are still doing our Easter theme and this week we’re focusing on the real reason for Easter.  Today Hailey learned more about Palm Sunday.

Hailey cut up some pieces from a palm branch that we got at church on Sunday.

The she glued a dirt road onto a piece of construction paper.

People put their coats and palm branches on the road as Jesus road his donkey into Jerusalem so that the donkey would have something soft to walk on.

So Hailey glued some coats onto the road.

She put on her pieces of palm branch that she cut out.

The finished road.

V is for Volcano

We thought it would be fun to talk about Volcanos to go along with our letter of the week.  So we read some books and looked at pictures and then made our own.

We mixed:
3 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
2 tbsp of cooking oil
water

We formed our volcano around an empty yogurt container.

Hailey decided to paint her volcano brown.

Once everything was dry we made our volcano erupt.  We mixed:
2 spoonfuls of baking soda
1 spoonful of dish soap
red and yellow food coloring
and when we were ready to set it off- we added the vinegar

(Rich thought it would be fun to mix all of those things together inside a water bottle and then hold his finger over the top while the pressure built up.  Let’s just say it erupted like what an actual volcano probably does and the kitchen was a mess!)

We also started doing the Raising Rock Stars Preschool letter of the week activities that I found over at 1+1+1=1.

Hailey coloring her verse for the week.  The letter V was kind of a hard letter to start with- the verse was hard for her to remember.

Then she colored and cut her One Way sign.

And read the One Way book.
