You’ll need: 2 paper plates, black paint, pink paint, pipe cleaner, yarn, one section of an egg carton.

Paint the egg carton section black.

Cut an ear shape from your second paper plate and then have your child add some pink to it.

Cut out eye holes, put everything together, add some yarn and you have a polar bear mask.  Hailey did not want to wear hers… oh well!

First we read some of Hailey’s books about polar bears.

Then we made our own:

Hailey painted and added snow flakes to one of the pages in her book.

Hailey told me what words to write on the left hand side of the page.

This page was painted with white, then Hailed added some clear glitter, then added some sequence for snow flakes.

Hailey added a black nose and black eyes using a marker.

On this page Hailey added ripped up tissue paper for the padded feet.

And on the last page Hailey added blue paint for water.

Here’s what you’ll need: blue paper, polar bear, tissue paper, white paint, glue, something to paint with, glitter.

Paint your paper to look like snow.

Sprinkle on some glitter.

Add some crumpled up tissue paper.

Paint the polar bear white.

First you’ll need- an empty soda bottle, white paint (*we used Tempra paint, and I do NOT recommend using it for this kind of project) and something to paint with.

First cover the soda bottle with white paint.

While the paint dries, gather the rest of your supplies:

Sticks, tissues, glue, felt for a scarf, pink paint, wiggle eyes, sock, orange paper and a pom pom.

Stuff some tissues into the sock and glue the pom pom on to the top of the sock- this will be the hat.

Dot some pink paint on for cheeks, add eyes, nose, mouth, scarf and sticks.

*You should probably use acrylic paint if you do this.  We used Tempra paint and the paint started flaking off of the bottle as it dried.  It was actually difficult to finish the project because when Hailey tried to add things to the snowman the paint would fall right off.  So, the idea is really cute- just use a different kind of paint.

You’ll need: 3 white circles- small, medium and large, construction paper to glue your snowman on, glue and some items to decorate your snowman.

Here’s what you’ll need:

3 boxes- small, medium and large, wrapping paper, scissors, tape, glue, construction paper and 2 things you can use for the snowman’s arms.

In the medium sized box- cut a small hole on 2 sides for the arms.

Turn your wrapping paper inside out and wrap the boxes with the white side showing. Put the arms through the holes in the middle sized box.

Make a face on the smallest box and add a hat.

Add some buttons to the medium sized box.

Hailey loved the snowman.

She loved taking him apart and putting him back together (we had to change the hat because the other one would not stay on).

And she thought it was funny to put him together the “wrong” way.

Here’s what you’ll need- construction paper- black, orange, white and blue, glue, wiggle eyes, scissors and some items to decorate your penguin.

Cut out a black body for your penguin, then white for his stomach. Cut two arms out of the black paper, two legs and a beak out of the orange paper.  I cut up some blue and purple paper for decorating.

 Hailey decorated the tummy of the penguin using stickers and the blue and purple pieces of paper.

Then Hailey put her penguin together on a piece of blue construction paper, for sturdiness.  She also added pom poms to the penguins tummy.

Here’s what you’ll need: 2 pieces of construction paper, some paint and something to paint with, contact paper and not pictured- scissors and a stapler.

You’ll also need the animals from the story.  I printed these animals back when I used to get the Mailbox Etc magazine.  But you can find some very similar printable animals here.

Paint the construction paper.

Cut out two mitten shapes.  You’ll need the contact paper in a minute… so it shouldn’t really been in this picture.

Staple the two pieces of mitten together.  Be sure to leave the bottom of the mitten open.  Then cover with contact paper to make it last longer.

Get “The Mitten” by Jan Brett, the mitten and your animals.

Read the story together and put the animals into the mitten as you come to that part of the story.

Get all of your ingredients together.

Mix everything together.

We made the cookies in the evening but Hailey was very hyper so we waited until the next day to decorate them.  She didn’t need anymore sugar!

 Add some frosting.

Decorate your snowman.

This is the snowman cookie that we decorated together.

And here is the snowman cookie Hailey decorated all by herself.

In case you want the recipe we used, here it is:

Sugar Cookies

6 cups of flour
2 cups of sugar
3 tablespoons of baking powder
1 pound soft butter

Take these four items and blend together using a pasty knife.

In a separate bowl combine:

3 large eggs
3 tsp vanilla

Beat them together and then add to the above ingredients. Roll out on a flour surface and cut into shapes. (I have used powdered sugar instead of flour to add some extra flavor and it makes them extra yummy.)
Bake at 375 for 6 minutes or until golden brown.

I put some towels down and gave Hailey one bin full of snow and an empty bin.  I also gave her some cups and spoons for digging.

We later added some cars and people to the snow.  And Hailey wanted to see what the snow felt like with her bare hands.  We were going to make a snowman but it was not snowman building snow, so we’ll have to try that another time.

When we finished playing with the snow we put some snow in one of the cups and kept an eye on it for the rest of the day.

A little while later there was still a little bit of snow left but most of it had melted.

The next time we checked our cup the snow was gone and it was all water.  Hailey said, “Ooooo.  The snow melted and turned to water!”
